How it all started

How it all started

Over the last 50 years picture book illustration has become a recognised and celebrated form of art. New and aspiring illustrators taking an interest in the picture book environment realise the value of being published successfully and we aim to find these talented people and give them an opportunity to engage with the world of publishing.

The International Centre for the Picture Book in Society is dedicated not only to developing picture book talent, but also to bringing picture books to society, and especially to the children who have little access to this art form.

For many children, a picture book is their first engagement with art. Lemniscaat Publishers took the initiative to begin a picture book illustration competition in  the UK, The Netherlands and Belgium in 2014. This proved to be a great succes. More than 750 young illustrators entered their work and a professional jury chose twelve winners.

One singular winner was not chosen because of the large number of beautiful, yet very diverse entries. The jury came to the conclusion that they could not and did not want to select only one winner from these  different approaches to picture book art.

The purpose of the World Wide Picture Book Illustration Competition indeed was and is not about finding an ultimate winner but about celebrating young picture book illustration talent.

To give the winners maximum exposure, a catalogue was published and sent to publishers worldwide.

An exhibition of the work of the winners travelled from the The Hive library in Worchester, to Rotterdam and then onto Shanghai.

The Worldwide Picture Book Illustration Competition 2015 will be simultaniously held in The United Kingdom, in The Netherlands and Belgium, in Germany and in South Africa with each country selecting 5 winners.

The work of the winners will be included in a catalogue and an exhibition of their work will travel from South Africa to Germany, Holland, the UK and China and hopefully also to the Bologna Book Fair in Italy.

With the support of an ever growing group of institutions and publishers, we hope that the Worlwide Picture Book Illustration Competition wil grow into a major event for talented new illustrators.
